Catholic Schools Week Celebrations Across NSW Schools

Catholic Schools Week at Trinity Murrumburrah

We are certainly celebrating learning at Trinity with the brand new learning facilities and state of the art technology. This year at Trinity we conducted Open Classrooms from 9:30 to 1pm on Wednesday March 8. This provided an opportunity for current and prospective parents and grandparents to come in and view how our new flexible learning spaces operate and how well Trinity students are assisted in their learning in the classroom, especially in the two critical Key Learning Areas of Literacy and Numeracy. At Trinity we are fortunate to have an inclusive community which caters for the diverse needs of all our students in a values based co-educational Catholic community, where all our students are happy and thrive in a supportive community. We love sharing and celebrating the wonderful teaching and learning that we are doing at Trinity! It was wonderful to be able to showcase first-hand how focused and engaged our students are with their learning.

Catholic Schools Week at St Patrick’s Parish School Cooma

At St Patrick’s Parish School in Cooma, the focus this last week has been on our wonderful community.

We have celebrated with a family picnic; and the rain clouds could not dampen the enthusiasm. There has been a Stage 1 swimming carnival with parents and Secondary students sharing the fun. This Lenten season, the staff have been conducting Children’s Liturgy at the Sunday Mass. The benefit of more strongly connecting with the Parish community has been valuable. Our community is our Church. Our Church is our community.

Catholic Schools Week at St Mary’s Batlow

Thursday the 9th March saw the 2017 CSW celebrations kick off at St Mary’s Batlow with a wonderful community celebration!

Parents and family members were invited to open classrooms to observe Maths lessons in operation. Teachers modelled a specific maths lesson and parents/carers were able to spend time playing maths games with their children.

This was followed by a reading session with family members. Student proudly read a story they had published themselves or chose favourite books to share with their family members. Students chose comfy locations around the school such as our beautiful new lawn area to snuggle up with a book and adult friend. There was also the opportunity to show family members around the school and particularly the classrooms.

Parents and family members then stayed to enjoy a picnic lunch. Under perfect weather conditions, picnic rugs, picnic baskets and cooler bags dotted the school grounds as families enjoyed this special time together.

Parents and family members then stayed on to lunchtime activities with their families including basketball, throwing hoops and a game or two of table tennis.

It was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the great learning opportunities and individual student achievements available at St Mary’s with our wonderful parent community.

Catholic Schools Week at St Mary’s Moruya

For the last two years the staff and children at St Mary’s have been working hard to change and improve literacy across the whole school.  There has been a focus on all children improving their writing and reading.  Children have choice about what they read and what they write each day.

Twice each term the children across the whole school celebrate their writing by holding publishing displays.  Children choose a story they have been working on during their Literacy Block and publish it after editing and typing. Parents and other classes are invited to these publishing displays to read and comment on the stories the children have presented.

During Catholic Schools Week 2017, the children presented their published stories in the school hall and invited the public to come and read and comment on their stories.  All classes have visited the hall during the week and have left comments on post it notes on the published stories.  Many parents and grandparents have taken the opportunity to come into the hall and read the stories presented.  The following pictures are of the published work presented by the children from K to Year 6.

Catholic Schools Week at St Mary’s Crookwell

Catholic Schools Week is a wonderful opportunity for students at St Mary’s to get out and about in the Crookwell Community, sharing our magnificent school spirit and joy in serving others.

This week our students have participated in visits to many local organisations.

On Monday Year One and Year Two commenced Catholic Schools Week with a visit to the Senior Citizens Centre. Our students loved talking with the Senior Citizens and asked questions about what it was like when they were students.

On Tuesday Year Four visited the Crookwell Early Learning Centre. The students read books and played games with the pre-school aged children, and Lachlan and Darcy entertained the children with their excellent guitar playing.

On Wednesday Kindergarten and Year 6 enjoyed their visit to Crookwell Preschool. They read a book and completed an art activity with the preschool children.

Also on Wednesday Year 5 ably assisted shoppers at the IGA Supermarket.  The students carried bags, pushed trolleys and helped locate groceries. They enjoyed offering service to others and demonstrated how polite and community minded St Mary’s students are.

On Thursday Year 3 and our School Choir entertaining the residents at Viewhaven. They sang songs, played the keyboard, recorder and guitar. It was lovely to hear how much the residents enjoyed their performance.

This week, as part of Catholic Schools Week, we also launched our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Club. STEM Club will run each week commencing with a range of building, construction, designing, coding and robotics tasks for Upper Primary students. This week the students constructed a building out of toothpicks and jellybeans that could bear the weight of a book.

Today we have concluded Catholic Schools Week with our Open Day and very entertaining Showcase of Learning. It was wonderful to meet many new prospective families keen to learn more about St Mary’s.

I would like to thank all the staff and students for the time and effort they have put into making Catholic Schools Week a true picture of who we are and what we stand for.

Catholic Schools Week at St Mary’s Young

As part of the Catholic Schools week celebrations, St Mary’s students are reaching out to the wider community through visits to the local pre-schools,. The Year 6 children have prepared presentations of favourite books and fairy tales to share their love of literature and the pre-schoolers have loved every moment! The students took along loved picture books to read with the children after the performances and it has been great to see the younger and older children connecting over quality literature. What better way to start a friendship!

Catholic Schools Week at St Joseph’s Boorowa

As part of our CSW activities, 19 students, 3 teachers and a parent headed over to Canberra on Friday 10th March to go the JLT AFL match at Manuka Oval to watch the game between the GWS Giants and North Melbourne. They had a marvellous time watching the footy, having dinner, participating in skill activities, enjoying ice creams and meeting the ‘G Man’. It was a fabulous evening and the first time most of the students had seen a live Aussie Rules match.

The excursion was linked to the School Sports Program that the children participate in each Tuesday Afternoon after school. This Term the students are learning about and developing their skills for Australian rules Football. At each session they participate in activities to learn more about the rules and skills of the sport. The program has also enabled the school to purchase equipment such as footballs, goal posts and rebounders to support the program.

St Joseph’s has been a part of the program since it first began. The program has enabled our students to participate in a multitude of different sports including golf, basketball, orienteering, gymnastics, athletics, and fitness circuits.
