My name is Orla. This is my story of why I did the World’s Greatest Shave. In the Christmas holidays I visited my three friends in Newcastle. One year ago the youngest of them was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Her name is Adelaide and she was 3 years old when they found out she was sick. After she was diagnosed she had to go to hospital every week for Chemotherapy and everything was very hard for her family. It was even hard for her mum to get her two brothers to school every day because Adelaide was not allowed near germs.
When I came back from their house I asked my mum how I could help people with cancer. My mum said that I could save money and give it to the Leukaemia Foundation to help find a cure for Leukaemia, so I started to do that. But after a while I found it was hard to save a lot of money that could help. My mum told me that some people cut their hair off and donate it for wigs and also raise money by doing it- so I decided to do that instead.
My mum said I had to be sure I wanted to cut all my hair off. She told me I had to take two weeks to think it over before I decided. I had to make a list of reasons why I should or shouldn’t do it and write tally marks each night to help me decide what to do. After a lot of thinking, I decided I would do it.
I asked a lot of people to sponsor me, my mum asked her friends and we had a Crazy Hair Day at school to help me get to my goal of raising $2000.
At the end of our Crazy Hair Day I had my hair cut off in front of the whole school! The hairdresser had to put my hair into 4 pony tails with lots of bands down each one before she cut them so it would keep the hair from getting tangled before it gets to the wigmaker. I had 35cm cut off which is the shortest amount they need for the wigs. My hair is now in a short “bob”. Thanks to St Michael’s donation of $262, I managed to raise $2098 for the Leukaemia Foundation! And the hair that I cut off is being sent to Wigs for Kids to be made into a wig for someone who hasn’t got any hair.
