During Science Week 2017, twenty-two Lumen Christi Catholic College students and four St Patrick’s Cooma students participated in the NSW State Competition of the University of Newcastle Super Challenge on 16 August, after winning their regional competition at the Sapphire Club, Tura Beach on 17 March.
The students participated in activities which encompass inquiry based learning, problem solving, discovery learning and group work; all with a science and engineering focus, such as bridge building, catapult construction, communications problems, electricity, hand mechanics, turbine and transportation problems.
The team participated in both day long and half day activities and were scored for each activity. A team result was then put together. The Lumen team did extremely well, coming fourth in their heat of nine on the day. This was a great effort and a lot of fun!
The students and schools would like to thank the various local groups that supported them in getting to this event; Bega Rotary, Merimbula- Pambula Lions, Monaro Meats, SMEC, Cooma Rotary, Monaro Sand & Gravel, anonymous donations and the Catholic Education Office.
