St Mary’s Primary School hosted a Science workshop with Education Interactive. During the workshop, students had the opportunity to be forensic scientists as they worked to solve the case of a missing 12 year old boy. They were trying to find out if the boy ran away from home to join the circus, had he been kidnapped, or had something else happened to him. In order to investigate this, students examined the crime scene and then participated in activities to piece the evidence together.
The Year 3 to 6 students looked at a range of animal tracks to discover what animals were near the crime scene. They then learnt about scatology as they examined scats found at the crime scene.
Fingerprints were taken, and a digital microscope was used to uncover hidden clues that may lead to the case being solved.
The day was a great success with students connecting what they had learnt through television crime show with real science. A Year 5 student stated, “It was great to have a go at real science, like you see on TV, and discover what different plants look like under a microscope. It was really interesting.
